Report: LSU curbed levee critic's academic freedom (AP)

BATON ROUGE, La. ? A higher education group has issued a new report saying Louisiana State University violated the academic freedom of a professor who was fired for publicly criticizing the levees after Hurricane Katrina.

The report from the American Association of University Professors was released Monday. Ivor Van Heerden was fired in 2009 after he linked the flooding that followed Hurricane Katrina to shoddy levee work by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. He had been at LSU since 1992 when he was let go.

The association stopped short of issuing a censure for LSU, which is its harshest rebuke. A censure is given to schools where it feels academic freedom is imperiled.
