Stephen Siller Foundation ready to hand out money to Staten Island ...

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. - The Stephen Siller Tunnels to Towers Foundation is getting ready to hand out some of the $3 million it has raised for Staten Island victims of Hurricane Sandy.

Frank Siller said that the foundation is teaming up with Home Depot to give Islanders in 2,236 yellow-tagged homes here $500 gift certificates for the home-improvement store.

Siller said that homeowners can use the money, $1.1 million in total, to buy building supplies, including Sheetrock and flooring, that they need to continue making their homes habitable again.

He said the Siller effort, which should commence in mid-January, was a logical follow-up to the city's Rapid Repair program.

"We feel this is the perfect time to step in," said Siller. "It's not a lot, but it's not a little. It will make a difference. It's another step toward getting people back in their homes."

Those who want to take advantage must have a Federal Emergency Management (FEMA) registration number in order to do so. Further details will be forthcoming from the foundation.

The Gap has also donated $100,000 in new clothes that the foundation will give out at Christmas. The foundation is also giving out "thousands and thousands" of toys for the holidays, Siller said.

Siller also said that another $500,000 raised would go toward purchasing 20 manufactured homes that would be temporarily put in Connecticut for displaced Islanders.

Some of the houses were delivered to Connecticut last week.

Storm victims can also apply for financial help from the fund sponsored by the Staten Island Advance, Project Hospitality and the St. George Theatre, with the cooperation of the Office of the Borough President.

CLICK HERE TO PRINT OUT THE APPLICATION FORM.

The Siller foundation also continues to operate a relief center at 2271 Hylan Blvd. where Sandy victims with FEMA numbers can get food, cleaning supplies, clothes and other supplies free of charge.

Most of the items have been donated by groups and companies around the country, Siller said.

"We can help take a burden off those families every week," said Siller. "Some people may not know we're there."

The foundation has also given out a number of space heaters, and is waiting for a supply of de-humidifiers to come in.

"I know people are going to want those," he said.

Siller said the foundation will stick with the recovery effort for the long haul.

"It's going to be ongoing for as long as we possibly can" he said. "Through the winter and into the spring for sure."

He said the foundation was trying to do everything it could for all 19,682 FEMA registrants on the Island.

"We can't give money to all 19,000," Siller said. "We're not FEMA. We're not government. We don't have the billions."

FEMA officials said they have doled out $80 million to Island storm victims so far.

Siller also said that up to 10,000 volunteers had cleaned out and gutted around 1,000 houses.

He said many volunteers had come here from across the country because the foundation had held Siller memorial races in those communities, or had built homes for wounded warriors.

Others are here from New Orleans, he said, paying forward help that they got in the wake of Hurricane Katrina.

Some volunteers came here from as far away as London, Siller said.

"It shows we're reaching out," he said. "It's a great range of people that we've known for 11 years. They're part of us part of our fiber."

Said Siller, "It shows the remarkable goodness and greatness of America. We are glad to play our small role."

Russell Wilson soars as Seahawks rout Bills 50-17

TORONTO (AP) ? It wasn't that long ago when Seattle Seahawks coach Pete Carroll was worried about overwhelming rookie quarterback Russell Wilson with too much information.

That's no longer a concern after Wilson and the surging Seahawks showed they're capable of piling up points north of the border, too.

A week after a 58-0 win at home against Arizona, Wilson ran for three touchdowns and threw for another in a 50-17 rout of the Bills in Buffalo's annual game in Toronto on Sunday.

"I'm just thrilled that he's been able to continue to grow," Carroll said. "For a time, we were just trying to get the offense going and not screw it up and make sure he could keep growing.

"Well, we're past that now."

Wilson was unstoppable during a first half in which he directed scoring drives on the Seahawks' first five possessions in building a 31-7 lead. It was a stretch in which he scored on 14-, 25- and 13-yard runs to become the NFL's first quarterback to run for three touchdowns in one half since Daunte Culpepper did it against Chicago on Sept. 3, 2000, according to STATS. And Wilson's 4-yard touchdown pass to Zach Miller was his 21st of the season, moving into a tie for second with Cam Newton among NFL rookies. Only Peyton Manning, with 26 in 1998, has more.

Then the Seahawks' opportunistic defense took over by forcing three consecutive turnovers to start the second half, including safety Earl Thomas scoring on 57-yard interception return.

"We're definitely clicking well," Wilson said, a third-round draft pick out of Wisconsin. "I've been on a couple of teams that have scored that many in college. But to do it in the National Football League, I mean that's really tough to do."

He's not kidding.

The Seahawks became the NFL's third team to score 50 points in consecutive weeks, joining the Los Angeles Rams and New York Giants, who both did it in 1950, according to STATS. And the 108 combined points over two weeks matched the NFL's third-highest total. The New England Patriots also scored 108 points in consecutive games last month, according to STATS.

And it's happening with the Seahawks (9-5) mounting a playoff push. They've won for the fifth time in six games and still aren't out of the running to win the NFC West. They return home to host division-leading San Francisco in what has become a key showdown.

The Bills (5-9) find themselves in a familiar state of unraveling. They were mathematically eliminated from playoff contention for a 13th season ? the NFL's longest active drought. And their performance further raises questions about coach Chan Gailey's job security.

"We played bad. We played poorly. And when you play poorly against a good football team you're going to look extremely bad," Gailey said. "You're angry at yourself because you didn't get the team ready to play at the level they needed to play."

The defense had a meltdown in giving up 45 or more points three times this season.

The offense sputtered for much of the first half before scoring 10 points in the final 1:10 cut the Seahawks' lead to 31-17.

And then things got ugly.

Quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick threw two interceptions and lost a fumble in turning the ball over on each of the Bills' first three possessions. The Seahawks capitalized by turning the three turnovers into 17 points.

"It went downhill from there fast," said Fitzpatrick, who was more upset about how the team's performance reflected on Gailey. "We played poorly and it reflects poorly on him. It eats me up."

Fitzpatrick went 21 of 38 for 217 yards with a 20-yard touchdown to Stevie Johnson. C.J. Spiller had 103 yards rushing and scored on a 14-yard run.

Wilson went 14 of 23 for 205 yards passing, and had 92 yards rushing.

It was an outing that came on an international stage on a day the NFL's two most talked about rookie quarterbacks were either hurt ? Washington's Robert Griffin III ? or lost ? Indianapolis' Andrew Luck.

"The kid is destined to be great," receiver Golden Tate said. "You didn't expect Russell Wilson to even be in the Rookie of the Year talk. The fact that he's responded and led this team this far, I think that says a lot."

Running back Marshawn Lynch had 113 yards rushing and scored on a 13-yard run in his first game against his former team. Defensive end Chris Clemons had 2 1/2 of Seattle's three sacks.

The Bills dropped to 1-4 in regular-season games at Toronto since the series began in 2008.

The Bills and Toronto-based Rogers Communications are closing in on a deal to extend the series, which expired after this game.

Torontonians might want to reconsider after this. With 5:20 left, fans in one end zone began chanting "Let's Go Blue Jays!"

At least they were entertained by both the Seahawks and at halftime by Korean pop star PSY performed his hit "Gangnam Style" at midfield.

The announced crowd of 40,770 was well below the downtown domed Rogers Centre's capacity of 54,000. And many who stuck around for the second half started rooting for the Seahawks.

That was fine for Carroll, who made his first trip to Toronto.

"This was exciting for us. We looked at it like a little bit of a bowl-game situation," Carroll said. "The 12th man north was there."

NOTES: While there were numerous fans dressed in Bills and Seahawks colors, fans were spotted wearing a Steelers' Troy Polamalu jersey, and another wearing a Tom Brady No. 12 Patriots jersey. ... Spiller reached 1,000 yards rushing for the first time in his career, and needed only 154 carries to get there. That's the second-fewest behind only Chicago Bears Beattie Feathers, who reached 1,000 yards on 119 carries in 1934. ... The Seahawks wore their third uniforms ? "wolf grey" jerseys and pants with green numbers and names ? for the first time since introducing them this offseason.

Cheese: Not as newfangled as we thought

Milk production and dairy processing allowed early farmers to produce food without slaughtering precious livestock, and making cheese?turned milk into a less perishable food that was more digestible for a population who at the time would have been intolerant to the lactose contained in milk.

Researchers from the?University of Bristol in Britain, with colleagues in the?United States?and?Poland, analyzed fatty acids embedded in prehistoric pottery from the Polish region of Kuyavia, and found they had been used to separate milk into fat-rich curds for?cheese and lactose-containing whey.

"The presence of milk residues in sieves ... constitutes the earliest direct evidence for?cheese-making," said M?lanie Salque from?Bristol, one of the authors of the research, which was published in?the journal Nature.

Peter Bogucki, another researcher involved in the work, said: "Making cheese?allowed them to reduce the lactose content of milk, and we know that, at that time, most of the humans were not tolerant to lactose."

Milk residues have been found at ancient sites up to 8,000 years old in?Turkey?and?Libya, but there was no evidence that the milk had been processed into cheese.

Until now, the earliest evidence of?cheese-making came from depictions of milk processing in murals several thousand years younger than the pottery fragments.

The researchers believe other vessels found in the same region were used for other specific purposes. Jars lined with beeswax were probably for storing water, and pottery containing the remnants of carcass fats was probably used for cooking meat.

"It is truly remarkable, the depth of insights into ancient human diet and?food processing technologies?these ancient fats preserved in archaeological ceramics are now providing us with," said?Richard Evershed, who heads the?Bristol?team.

Hits for this post:16

Having three school going kids at home and one of them who is really into art and craft, my house has a mini collection of stationary and craft supplies. In fact it is like a mini stationary and craft supply shop. We have all sort of pencils , erasers, various sizes of tapes and even labels from rectangular to circle labels, we have different sizes of scissors and so many more. When we were away from home, staying with daddy in his rented apartment, we felt so handicap without these supply as we got so bored at home and they kids can?t do their art and craft to kill time.

Baby Boomer- Brad Pitt? | Living better at 50 | Online Womens ...

There is a lot?discussion these days?in the media?about baby boomers and their economic strength. It?s well known now that baby boomers hold 70 percent of the U.S. wealth and will be inheriting trillions in the next 20 years. However, who are the other marketing groups that make up our 312 million Americans? I believe it helps to have a face with a name. Here are the four main U.S. marketing demographics with famous icon examples for easy identification?with spending statistics:

Dustin Hoffman is 75. Silent Generation: 67 ? 87 Years Old

Born between 1925 and 1945, saw the Great Depression, lower birth rates due to World War II, Korean War, icons such as Elvis, Marilyn Monroe, James Dean, better education, this generation tended not to protest or carry posters.

Don?t underestimate this demographic; they are grandparents spending over $50 billion annually on their grandkids? education, trips, gifts and more. They also purchase the majority of?luxury cruises. Note that Larry King is now the spokesperson for Grandparents.com, a rapidly growing website helping grandparents to find?activities, recipes, travel and games to help keep grandkids entertained.

Brad Pitt is 48. Baby Boomer: 48 ? 66 Years Old

Born between 1946 and 1964 with cultural influences of rock ?n? roll, Woodstock, Beatles, Vietnam War, JFK assassination, ?The Ed Sullivan Show,? ?Happy Days,? women?s rights, civil rights, sexual freedom and new highways that encouraged travel.

This generation holds 70 percent of the U.S. wealth,?a the main purchasers of?most cars; in fact, three out of five new cars purchased were by baby boomers. Baby boomers own the most homes, eight out of 10 own their homes. KB Home recently partnered with AARP to create Simply Living, a collection of home options for aging adults in design, safety and technology from the kitchen to bedroom and bath. Websites featuring homes and boomer-friendly towns such as Best Boomer Towns ?feature the best 21 towns to live in the U.S. This is due to the baby boomer?s? desire to move away from the snow, cold, rain and, now, hurricanes.

Cameron Diaz is 40. Gen X: 32 ? 48 Years Old

Born between 1964 and 1980. Gen X is also called the MTV generation, grew up with AIDS epidemic, 40 percent have divorced parents, dot-com bubble and attaining higher educational levels. A Census Bureau study released a few months ago found that those in the 35-44 bracket experienced the biggest percent decline in median household net worth between 2005 and 2010.

Justin Bieber is 18. Gen Y: 14 ? 32 Years Old

Born between 1980 and 1998. The demographic cohort, also known as the Millennial Generation, Boomerangs, Echo Boomers, Trophy Kids and Eighties Babies. Grew up with computers, environmental awareness, high expectations for employment and tend to marry later.

This generation has been best known over the past year for moving back in with their baby boomer parents. In fact, 30 percen of Gen Y?s moved back in with their parents after college due to the job market.

Clearly, at this time in size and economic strength the baby boomers purchasing power is greater than any other generation. The brands who understand, connect and engage them will earn a share of their wallet and wealth!

Trying To Resist Holiday Temptations? 7 Tips for Abstainers and ...

Trying To Resist Holiday Temptations? 7 Tips for Abstainers and ModeratorsAh, the holidays.

Everywhere you go, you face cookies, candy, booze, and snacks and treats of every kind. While this creates a festive atmosphere, it can also lead to a lot of anxiety and/or guilt in those of us trying to resist temptation.

As you think about how to handle holiday temptations, your strategy may depend on whether you?re a moderator or an abstainer when trying to resist temptation.

You?re a moderator if you?

  • find that occasional indulgence heightens your pleasure ? and strengthens your resolve
  • get panicky at the thought of ?never? getting or doing something

You?re an abstainer if you?

  • have trouble stopping something once you?ve started
  • aren?t tempted by things that you?ve decided are off-limits
(Of course, in the case of things like nicotine and alcohol, abstention is necessary.)

I?m an abstainer, without a doubt. Like Samuel Johnson, who declined an offer of wine by saying,?Abstinence is as easy to me as temperance would be difficult,? I find it much easier to give things up altogether than to indulge in moderation.

For me, no gingerbread cookies, no problem; one cookie, I spend the rest of the day thinking about when and why I should get more cookies. It?s so, so, so much easier for me to abstain than to try to be moderate. You wouldn?t believe what I?m abstaining from these days! A lot.

If you?re a moderator, however, that strategy wouldn?t work for you. You?d probably be better off thinking, ?I can have two cookies,? and focusing on enjoying them. You can really revel in whatever it is that you?re permitting yourself, and by putting a limit on your consumption, you may find yourself enjoying it more.

So, to apply the moderator/abstainer model to yourself when facing holiday temptations, try this:

  1. Decide if you?re a moderator or an abstainer.
  2. Decide what temptation you?d like to resist, and to what degree.
  3. Don?t indulge on the fly. If you want to indulge, plan ahead. This helps you feel in control and also to decide where you?ll get the most bang for your temptation buck.
  4. As you approach your tempting situation, imagine yourself living up to your rule. Imagine yourself skipping the cookies; or imagine yourself taking just two cookies. Think about how pleased you?ll be that you stuck to your guidelines for yourself.
  5. Anticipate situations that might make it hard to stick to your rule, and have a plan to deal with it. ?If X happens, then I will do Y.?
  6. For moderators: it?s one thing to indulge on the day of a holiday or at a single meal. It?s another thing to indulge during the holiday season. It?s a holiDAY.
  7. Remember the argument of the growing heap, or as I like to call it, the ?does one coin make a person rich?? question. Of course, one cookie is no big deal.? That?s absolutely true. But be very wary of that argument.

Either strategy can help us resist temptation; as with so many aspects of the pursuit of happiness, the secret is to know yourself.

Also: it can seem friendly to urge people to break their diets, to indulge in an extra glass of wine, or to treat themselves in some way. ?I can?t believe you?re not going to try this dessert, I made it myself!? ?Just one won?t hurt!? ?This is a party,? live a little!? But the kind thing to do, in almost every situation, is to try to help people stick to their resolutions. Of course, bullying them if you think they?re over-indulging isn?t kind, either.

?How about you?
Do you recognize yourself as an abstainer or a moderator? Have you found any good strategies for coping with holiday temptation?

?

I always find a lot to think about on Seth Godin?s blog.

Brazil forest protection turns to digital world

(AP Photo/Andre Penner, File)

(AP) ? Landowners who broke Brazil's environmental laws by clearing their farms of native forest used to have just one way to make right with government inspectors: plant trees. Now, they can clear their names by just pointing and clicking.

After decades trying to protect rapidly shrinking forest, Brazil has turned to the digital world and launched a new platform called BVRio that allows growers with more untouched forest on their land than is legally required to sell "quotas" to farmers who fall short, one hectare at a time, for a price that will be determined by supply and demand.

From environmentalists to landowners, all sides agree the privately developed tool could revolutionize Brazil's ability to protect the world's biggest rainforest while enforcing the country's just-enacted environmental law.

Under the rule, growers have to keep a "legal reserve," or a minimum amount of native growth on their properties ranging from 20 percent to 80 percent of their land, depending on the type of vegetation. The trading platform launched this week allows farmers to find and negotiate directly with each other.

For landowners, the new tool will be a boon, said founder Pedro Moura Costa. Buying a forest quota will likely be cheaper, and it certainly will be easier, than replanting a corresponding amount of native vegetation. About 400 property owners pre-registered with BVRio before its start.

"Planting trees, for someone who might be in an entirely different business, is very hard," Costa said. "Going into BVRio and meeting their legal requirements in seconds is much easier."

Environmentalists believe the legislation will protect the integrity of each biome, or ecosystem, because quotas are only allowed to be bought and sold within biologically similar areas. For example, a farmer in the central Brazilian "cerrado" biome can't sell his extra quotas to an Amazonian cattle rancher who clear-cut tropical rainforest and needs an acre of trees.

That creates an incentive for owners of intact biodiversity-rich forest to keep it that way, said Paulo Barreto, a senior forestry researcher at Imazon, an environmental watchdog agency.

"This was something that was really needed," he said.

Saving what's left of Brazil's rainforests, and reviving swaths of destroyed vegetation, is key to the planet's health.

The Amazon jungle's capacity to absorb carbon dioxide is held as one of the world's most important defenses against global warming. The country's second-largest biome, the coastal Atlantic forest, is a biodiversity hotspot with 60 percent of the country's threatened species.

With such protection in mind, a diverse group of farmers, environmentalists and business have welcomed BVRio, with the BV standing for Bolsa Verde or "Green Stock." Two key elements, however, still need to be in place for the market to actually prevent environmental destruction, Barreto said.

First, the system has to remain transparent, so environmental organizations can check satellite images of areas being used as offsets to make sure they remain untouched. State governments also need to continue registering landowners and ramping up pressure to ensure the forest code is obeyed.

Under the new law, farmers have to register their properties with state governments and get land-use licenses, which provide additional guarantees that the forest quotas being traded through BVRio correspond to real standing trees. Enforcement and verification remain up to state governments.

"There is a demand now because the pressure is strong," Barreto said. "Now they'll have to continue in their role of enforcing the rules regarding the 'legal reserve.'"

To be sure, that demand created by the new environmental legislation has given the forest exchange tremendous lucrative potential, Costa said. Brazil has about 5 million rural properties, and about 4 million of them don't meet the minimum vegetation requirement, he said. It's hard to estimate the potential value of the market once it matures, but it could reach into multiple billions of dollars, he said.

Costa should know, as one of the first to bet on carbon credits trading. In 1997, he co-founded EcoSecurities, a for-profit business that developed carbon credits and greenhouse gas offsets a full year before the U.N. convention on climate change that resulted in the Kyoto Protocol.

"We saw the birth and growth of the carbon market and thought it would be interesting to replicate that," he said.

While critics had charged that carbon-offset markets created legal means to appease regulators without fostering real changes in behavior, Costa said BVRio provides incentives to keep forested areas intact, instead of replanting areas that have been cleared.

"The use of quotas can be a great mechanism for consolidation (of forested areas)," he said.

Business leaders such as Marina Grossi, president of the Brazilian Business Council for Sustainable Development, said it's often difficult for companies to comply with environmental legislation. Laws are complex, and can require businesses venture into unfamiliar activities such as planting. Mechanisms such as BVRio make the whole process easier, she said.

"Companies want to follow the new regulation, but how? What's the most effective way?" she asked.

Quotas existed under previous legislation, but enforcement of deforestation rules was so lax, and finding trading partners was so difficult without a platform such as BVRio, that nobody bothered to buy and sell quotas.

Growers such as Mauro Lucio Costa, president of the Association of Rural Producers of Paragominas and no relation to the founder of BVRio, are ready to jump on the opportunity. He said there's great demand for the service among producers in his corner of the Amazon.

Once known for losing forest faster than nearly any other part of the Amazon, the rural municipality of Paragominas has virtually halted illegal tree burning and logging by ramping up enforcement, but also by promoting local economies that don't require cutting down jungle.

An effort such as BVRio would help that by fixing monetary value to a tree left standing, making it potentially worth more than one that's been cut. The landowner who sells a forest credit on BVRio can also sell carbon credits for the same property, and reap other fiscal incentives from keeping the forest untouched.

"This is the fastest, most intelligent way for us to make up the deficits we have," the grower said via a video call, wearing the headset upside down so he could keep on his trademark cowboy hat. "We have many producers in Paragominas who want to become law-abiding. We have a lot of producers who want to buy in."
