Central Georgians Asked to Help With Cancer Study

The American Cancer Society is asking for your help to volunteer for a new, nationwide cancer study. Bibb County ranks significantly higher than the state's average in cancer cases, and the American Cancer Society estimates close to 4000 people will be diagnosed with cancer in the county this year.

Mayor Robert Reichert and several other officials from Macon and Warner Robins pledged their support for the American Cancer Society's Cancer Prevention Study 3.

The study is the third in their Cancer Prevention Series and will help researchers understand lifestyle, environmental and genetic factors that cause or prevent cancer.

Anyone between the ages of 30-65 who have never been diagnosed with cancer can participate. The study requires a one-time blood sample and a lifetime commitment, but American Cancer Society's, Molly Herrin says it's easier than it sounds.

"It's not intensive but look at it this way every two years you take twenty or thirty minutes to affect the lives of hundreds of thousands of people for generations to come."

Herrin says everything is confidential and your blood sample would only be used if you developed cancer during the study.

"We'll look at the blood vile to see if there are markers there that will help physicians and medical teams know that there is cancer in your body at an earlier state." says Herrin.?

She says this study is different because it targets a younger audience and encourages diversity.

Nancy White, Director of Oncology at the Medical center of Central Georgia says because our lifestyles are constantly changing, it's important to keep our research up-to date.? "It's the second leading cause of death in our country and we have made great strides people are living longer with cancer but we have not won that war." says White.

She says joining the study could end the war against cancer.

Enrollment for the study will be held at the Cancer Life Center at the Medical Center of Central Georgia in the Center for Ambulatory Services, 1014 Forsyth Street on Wednesday, January 25th from 7am-12:30 pm and January 26th from 2pm-7:30pm.

Central Georgia residents can schedule their appointment for the study at www.seeuthere.com/cps3enroll/medicalcenterofga.

A news release from the American Cancer Society says to enroll in the study, individuals will be asked to read and sign an informed consent form; complete a comprehensive survey packet that asks for information on lifestyle, behavioral, and other factors related to his or her health; have height, weight, blood pressure, heart rate, and waist circumference measured; and give a small blood sample. Upon completion of this process, the American Cancer Society will send follow-up surveys every few years to update participants' information, and annual newsletters with study updates and results. The in-person enrollment process takes approximately an hour to complete.

Bombing in Syrian capital of Damascus kills 25 (AP)

BEIRUT ? A bomb exploded Friday at a busy Damascus intersection, killing 25 people and wounding dozens in the second major attack in the Syrian capital in as many weeks, officials said, vowing to respond to further security threats with an "iron fist."

The government blamed "terrorists," saying a suicide bomber had blown himself up in the crowded Midan district. But the country's opposition demanded an independent investigation, accusing forces loyal to the Syrian regime of being behind the bombing to tarnish a 10-month-old uprising against President Bashar Assad.

"Is there anything worse than these crimes?" said Majida Jomaa, a 30-year-old housewife who ran to the streets after hearing the explosion around 11 a.m. "Is this freedom?"

It was impossible to determine the exact target of the blast, but a police bus was riddled with shrapnel and blood was splattered on its seats, according to Syrian TV video and a government official. Blood also stained the street, which was littered with shattered glass.

The bomber "detonated himself with the aim of killing the largest number of people," Interior Minister Mohammed Shaar told reporters. State media said most of the dead were civilians but security forces were also among them.

Midan is one of several Damascus neighborhoods that have seen frequent anti-Assad protests on Fridays since the uprising began in March, inspired by the revolutions around the Arab world.

The violence marks a dramatic escalation of bloodshed in Syria as Arab League observers tour the country to investigate Assad's bloody crackdown on dissent. The monitoring mission will issue its first findings Sunday at a meeting in Cairo.

In a statement, the Interior Ministry vowed to respond to any security threats with an "iron fist."

Syria's state media, SANA, put the initial death toll at 25 and more than 60 wounded. The death toll included 10 confirmed dead and the remains of an estimated 15 others whose bodies had yet to be identified.

"I found bodies on the ground, including one of a man who was carrying two boxes of yogurt," Midan resident Anis Hassan Tinawi, 55, told the AP.

The blast came exactly two weeks after twin bombings targeting intelligence agencies in Damascus killed 44 people. The regime blamed terrorists for those explosions as well.

A Syrian official, speaking on condition of anonymity because he was not allowed to talk publicly to the media, said a smaller bomb exploded Friday in the Damascus suburb of Tal, killing a girl. Security experts dismantled another bomb nearby, he said.

While many of the anti-government protests sweeping the country remain peaceful, the uprising as a whole has become more violent in recent months as frustrated demonstrators take up arms to protect themselves from the steady military assault. An increasing number of army defectors also have launched attacks, killing soldiers and security forces.

The unrest has posed the most serious challenge to the Assad family's 40-year dynasty. The regime's crackdown has led to broad worldwide condemnation and sanctions, eviscerated the economy and left Assad an international pariah just as he was trying to open up his country and modernize the economy.

The protests continued Friday around the country, and security forces killed at least eight people, according to the British-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights. The Local Coordination Committees, another activist group, put the death toll at 17.

The Observatory said 50,000 protesters took to the streets in the Damascus suburb of Douma in the largest protest of the day. The numbers were impossible to confirm, however, because Syria has banned most foreign journalists and prevented independent reporting.

Also Friday, SANA said terrorists blew up a pipeline that carries diesel from the central province of Homs to nearby Hama. There have been several pipeline blasts in recent months, but it is unclear who is behind them.

The government has long contended that the turmoil in Syria is not an uprising but the work of terrorists and foreign-backed armed gangs.

In a sign of just how polarized Syria has become, the opposition questioned the government's allegations that terrorists were behind Friday's attacks and the Dec. 23 bombings.

Opposition leaders suggest the regime itself could have been behind the violence to try to erode support for the uprising and show the Arab League observers that it is a victim in the upheaval. Neither the regime nor the opposition has produced evidence backing their accusations, and no one but Syrian authorities have access to investigate the blasts.

A spokesman for the Syrian National Council opposition umbrella group called for an independent investigation.

"It is a continuation of the regime's dirty game as it tries to divert attention from massive protests," spokesman Omar Idilbi said. "We call upon for an independent international committee to investigate these crimes that we believe that the regime planned and carried out."

The Arab League observers started work Dec. 27 on a mission to monitor Syria's compliance with a League-drafted peace deal. Under the deal, Assad's regime is supposed to pull its military off the streets and stop its crackdown on protesters.

Despite the observers' presence, violence has spiked, with Syrian activists saying up to 400 people have been killed since Dec. 21. The U.N. says the overall death toll since the revolt began is more than 5,000.

Arab League Deputy Secretary-General Ahmed bin Helli condemned Friday's attack.

"We are concerned about these explosions. That is why we are calling on the Syrian government to be totally cooperative with the mission and to work by all means to stop the bloodshed and allow room for the political process to begin," he told The Associated Press in Cairo, where the League is based.

Bin Helli said the observers will have insight into the attack.

"The mission which is on the scene will undoubtedly have an opinion," he said.

At the United Nations, Secretary General Ban Ki-moon condemned the bombings, extending his condolences to the families of the victims and saying, "all violence is unacceptable and must stop."

In Washington, State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland condemned the attack but declined to say who the U.S. believed was responsible.

"What's interesting here is that, as with previous attacks, the Assad regime has blamed just about everybody," Nuland told reporters. "They've blamed the opposition, they've blamed al-Qaida, they've even blamed the United States. Meanwhile, the opposition, including the Free Syrian Army, has denied carrying out the attacks and it has itself accused the regime of staging these things."

Asked about the Arab League monitors, Nuland said the U.S. accepts that they are doing their best with an uncooperative regime.

Opposition groups have been deeply critical of the Arab League mission, saying it is giving Assad cover for his crackdown. The observer mission's Sudanese chief has raised particular concern because he served in key security positions under Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir, who is wanted for crimes against humanity in Darfur.

Critics also say the mission is far too small ? and too dependent on government escorts ? to be effective. The regime says the escorts are vital to the monitors' personal safety.

Salman Shaikh, director of The Brookings Doha Center in Qatar, said it was impossible to determine who was behind the attack, even with the Arab League observers offering an outside perspective.

"This again points to the need to have full independent credible investigation," he told the AP.

"I would actually say on the eve of the Arab League meeting, the Arab League mission is failing," he added. "It is failing to protect civilians. We have not had a halt to the violence. I think the Arab League now needs to go to the United Nations and seek a helping hand from the international community."

Police in eastern China Friday launched a massive search for a man who shot and robbed a man in front of a bank. The rare daylight robbery has dampened the public mood ahead of the Chinese New Year.

The authorities in Nanjing, the capital of Jiangsu province, have offered a reward of 100,000 yuan ($15,850) for information leading to his arrest, Xinhua reports.

The man, believed to be in his 40s, is suspected of being involved in six cases of homicide and robbery over the last seven years.

The victim was shot at 9.50 a.m. after he came out of a bank after withdrawing 200,000 yuan.

The suspect fled the scene in a car after the robbery, an official said. The Chinese New Year is on Jan 23.

The sacrament. Looking for players.

The Sacrament

You are walking down the streets of London out of boredom, something to brake the repetition of your life. The chime of Big Ben brakes you out of your daydream. The sun is sinking beneath the harbor setting the sky ablaze with reds and yellows. The streets aren't the safest place at night as of late form the random killings every night so you decide to take a short cut through the park. As you walk through the darkness you quickly regret your decision to take the short cut. The shadows around you seem to be alive, there is a dark sense of foreboding, every noise makes you jump. The exit is just up head, your feet start to move faster and before you know it you are in a full sprint for the exit, safety but safety from what? Just as your foot is about to cross the threshold to safety a figure appeared in front of you. The figure that appeared seems to be a man in an overcoat. the mysterious man stares at you for a moment with a warm but seemingly fake smile before speaking. "You have been chosen my friend." The man says keeping the same fake smile throughout the sentence. Who is this guy? Is he some kind of religious nut? You think to yourself trying to make your feet move but to no success.

It feels as if some force is holding you there as your eyes wander back up to the man in question. "You cannot leave yet, I have not given you your gift yet." The man smiles up at you, his smile getting warmer and larger. He then reached into his coat making you flinch expecting a gun. The man laughed as he pulled out two books, one white with gold trimmings, the other black with ruby inlay. You stare at the books bewildered for a moment before the man let out a small chuckle. "This is your destiny I hold in my hands." You look down at the books once more feeling a strange pull to one of them. Your body seems to act on its own as your hand reaches out and grasps the book. "So that is your choice? i have played my part, the rest is up to you." The man chuckles out as he puts the other book back into his coat. You stare down at the book in your hand, the questions racing through your mind. Your eyes wander back up towards the man only to see air.

You look up at Big Ben and see an hour has passed, it has gotten late. You rush home forgetting about the book in your hand until you get inside. You stare down at the book for a moment before laying it down on the table and going about your daily retain. No matter how much you try to ignore the book you find yourself being drawn back to it. Finally you crack the book open seeing a strange symbol just inside the cover. Your curiosity is peeked at this point as you read through the book. The book is seemingly about some made up war between angel and demons, you laugh at the very thought of something so ridiculous. As you come to the last page there are directions.

Before you know it you have drawn out a symbol on the floor. You place candles at the corners of the symbols, lighting them as they are placed. You look down at the book one final time reading the next part several times in your head. You must spill your blood into the appointed section of the sacred sacrament. Knife in hand a bead of sweat runs down your face as your grip on the knife tightens. This is crazy. You think to yourself before sliding the knife across your wrist. You watch as your crimson life's liquid runs down into the center of the circle, slowly filling it. Just as the center fills there is a flash of light, knocking you onto your back. Your gaze rises up to see someone with their hand outstretched to help you up. "I shall become your sword and your shield, my lord." The person says to you with a genuinely warm smile.

Google TV is alive and kicking with new partners and ARM chipsets

Google TV

The stories about the death of Google TV seem to have all been a bit exaggerated, as Google just announced a slew of new partners -- including ARM processor manufacturer Marvell -- on board with GTV.  Before I wax too poetic (I'm a huge Google TV fan), here's the list of announced partners:

  • LG - We’re thrilled to welcome global consumer electronics leader LG to the Google TV family. LG will showcase a new line of TVs powered by Google TV running on their own L9 chipset at CES.
  • Marvell - Also new to the Google TV family this year is Marvell, an innovative worldwide leader in chipsets. Marvell will be showcasing a new generation of Google TV solutions which will help bring more products across more price points to consumers.
  • MediaTek - We’re also excited to partner with MediaTek, the leading Taiwanese chipset designer. MediaTek chipsets will power yet another wave of Google TV devices.
  • Samsung - We’re excited to work closely with Samsung to bring Google-TV powered Samsung devices to market in 2012.
  • Sony - We’re happy to build on our partnership with Sony. At CES, Sony will unveil new devices for the US and plans to offer Google TV powered products in several countries around the world in 2012.
  • Vizio - Last year we announced our partnership with Vizio at CES. This year we’re excited to join Vizio as they hold private demos at CES showcasing their new line of Google TV-powered products.

We'll be sure to get as many details as we can at CES next week, where we expect Google Android news to flow like wine.

The "big deal" here is the ARM support (here comes that poetic waxing).  The only thing wrong with Google TV as it stands now is hardware that doesn't have enough oompf to satisfy our fickle desire for speed.  The Atom chipset has had it's day, and it's time to move forward.  Give me a set-top to replace my Logitech Revue with a quad-core chip and a sizzling GPU and I'm all over it, and expect I wouldn't be alone.  We've always thought that Google TV could capture a big portion of the set-top box market, and with news like this it might just be moving into the game console market as well.  Long live Google TV!

Adobe's Todd Teresi to lead Apple's iAd unit, fully purge himself of Flash reliance

It had to happen at some point, right? Adobe and Apple -- two names in a similar field -- would inevitably end up hiring someone that worked at the other firm in a past life, and unsurprisingly, the world is up in arms about an acquisition that would go unreported if not for the past drama between the two outfits. As the story goes, Todd Teresi (formerly of Adobe) has been hired to be the new chief of Apple's iAd mobile advertising division, but since the hire hasn't been officially confirmed, it's all based on "sources familiar with the matter." Interestingly, Bloomberg BusinessWeek asserts that the iAd team has been "cutting prices to keep customers from jumping ship to rivals, including Google," noting that the dominance seen in the tablet market isn't exactly translating on the advertising side. Something tells us Apple's got a few bills to lose while experimenting, though.

Drug Eases Gout Flare-ups in Some Patients: Study (HealthDay)

THURSDAY, Jan. 5 (HealthDay News) -- Preliminary findings suggest a drug used to treat another disease might also reduce painful flare-ups in gout patients starting new medication regimens.

In a new study, the protein-inhibitor drug rilonacept (Arcalyst) appeared to markedly lower the risk of gout flare-ups during the first few months of treatments aimed at lowering uric acid levels.

While effective in lowering the risk for gout attacks in the long-term, uric acid-lowering treatment can initially boost the risk for flare-ups as it breaks up and releases the uric acid crystal deposits at the source.

"To reduce deposits of crystals in the joints, we advise patients to initiate treatment with medications that lower levels of uric acid in the blood," study author Dr. H. Ralph Schumacher, Jr., a professor of medicine at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, said in a journal news release.

Gout, a debilitating and painful form of inflammatory arthritis, now affects upwards of 8.3 million Americans, according to the release. Flare-ups , which involve excruciating joint pain, redness, swelling and warmth, can last days or weeks.

The researchers wanted to learn if rilonacept could lower this short-term risk for by neutralizing a specific target protein -- interleukin 1 or IL-1 -- before it initiates inflammation.

They looked at 83 gout patients in 27 U.S. study centers who had a history of gout flare-ups and high levels of uric acid. All were placed on a chronic uric-acid lowering regimen of the standard drug allopurinol.

About half were also given an initial double-dose injection of rilonacept (320 milligrams) followed by a single dose for 16 weeks. The other half received sugar pills.

Rilonacept patients were less likely to have flare-ups, with 15 percent experiencing flare-ups three-months into the study compared with 45 percent among the non-rilonacept group, the researchers found.

"Well-tolerated drugs that reduce the risk of gout flares when initiating uric-acid lowering therapy could make patients more likely to continue important long-term treatments that control gout," Schumacher said in the release.

"(And) this trial provides well-controlled evidence that this IL-1 blocker is effective in preventing acute gout flares in this setting," he added. "Rilonacept appears safe and well tolerated and could increase patient adherence to long-term urate-lowering therapy."

The study appeared online Jan. 5 in the journal Arthritis & Rheumatism.

Dr. Michael A. Becker, a professor emeritus of medicine at the University of Chicago, described the findings as "very promising." However, he cautioned that the high cost of rilonacept will most likely curtail its use.

"This is a very expensive drug," he said. "And insurance will be an issue. So I think you will have to carefully justify its use and define the universe of patients who are likely to be treated with it."

"But there are a number of patients who can't take a less expensive alternative, such as nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, because of their kidney function or ulcer disease," Becker noted. "So for this population of patients who can't tolerate cheaper medications, rilonacept may be a necessary indication."

Oscars awarded for film recorder, cameras, software (Reuters)

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) ? And the year's first Oscars go to ...

Micro-voxels, the Pictorvision Eclipse electronically stabilized aerial camera platform, Stab-C Classic stabilizing heads and the ARRILASER Film Recorder.

Once again the Academy has announced the winners of its Scientific and Technical Awards, and once again the list of achievements being recognized by the Academy will sail right over the heads of those who aren't attuned to the Sciences part of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.

But for those in the know, the eight achievements chosen by the Academy have, in the words of the AMPAS press release, "a proven record of contributing significant value to the process of making motion pictures."

The Sci-Tech Awards, as they're dubbed, some in three versions. One awards the recipient with a certificate, one awards a plaque, and one, which isn't given out every year, awards an Oscar statuette.

This year's 27 honorees include three men who will receive Oscar statuettes for the design and development of the ARRILASER Film Recorder.

The Sci-Tech Awards will be presented at the Beverly Wilshire Hotel on Saturday, February 11 -- and, if history is any indication, will be hosted by an actress who has appeared in at least one special-effects-heavy movie.

From the AMPAS press release, here are this year's honorees:

Technical Achievement Award (Academy Certificate)

To Andrew Clinton and Mark Elendt for the invention and integration of micro-voxels in the Mantra software.

This work allowed, for the first time, unified and efficient rendering of volumetric effects such as smoke and clouds, together with other computer graphics objects, in a micro-polygon imaging pipeline.

Scientific and Engineering Award (Academy Plaque)

To Radu Corlan, Andy Jantzen, Petru Pop and Richard Toftness for the design and engineering of the Phantom family of high-speed cameras for motion picture production.

The Phantom family of high-speed digital cameras, including the Phantom Flex and HD Gold, provide imagery at speeds and efficacy surpassing photochemical technology, while seamlessly intercutting with conventional film production.

To Dr. Jurgen Noffke for the optical design and Uwe Weber for the mechanical design of the ARRI Zeiss Master Prime Lenses for motion picture photography.

The Master Primes have achieved a full stop advance in speed over existing lenses, while maintaining state-of-the-art optical quality. This lens family was also the first to eliminate the magnification change that accompanied extreme focus shifts.

To Michael Lewis, Greg Marsden, Raigo Alas and Michael Vellekoop for the concept, design and implementation of the Pictorvision Eclipse, an electronically stabilized aerial camera platform.

The Pictorvision Eclipse system allows cinematographers to capture aerial footage at faster flying speeds with aggressive platform maneuvering.

To E.F. "Bob" Nettmann for the concept and system architecture, Michael Sayovitz for the electronic packaging and integration, Brad Fritzel for the electronic engineering, and Fred Miller for the mechanical engineering of the Stab-C Classic, Super-G and Stab-C Compact stabilizing heads.

This versatile family of 5-axis camera and lens stabilizers allows any standard motion picture camera to be fitted into the open architecture of the structure. The system can be quickly balanced and made ready for shooting platforms such as helicopters, boats, camera cars or cranes.

To John D. Lowry, Ian Cavon, Ian Godin, Kimball Thurston and Tim Connolly for the development of a unique and efficient system for the reduction of noise and other artifacts, thereby providing high-quality images required by the filmmaking process.

The "Lowry Process" uses advanced GPU-accelerated, motion estimation-based image processing tools to enhance image quality.

To FUJIFILM Corporation, Hideyuki Shirai, Dr. Katsuhisa Oozeki and Hiroshi Hirano for the design and development of the FUJIFILM black and white recording film ETERNA-RDS 4791 for use in the archival preservation of film and digital images.

Specifically designed for laser film recording and widely used in the industry today, the high-resolution FUJIFILM ETERNA-RDS 4791 film stock is an important step in protecting the heritage of the motion picture industry.

Academy Award of Merit (Oscar Statuette)

To Franz Kraus, Johannes Steurer and Wolfgang Riedel for the design and development of the ARRILASER Film Recorder.

The ARRILASER film recorder demonstrates a high level of engineering resulting in a compact, user-friendly, low-maintenance device, while at the same time maintaining outstanding speed, exposure ratings and image quality.

Sony 16-50mm f/2.8 lens reviewed by Kurtmunger.

We didn?t talk a lot about the new A-mount 16-50mm f/2.8 lens. So let?s take a deep look at the lens by reading the latest review from our friend Kurt Munger (Click here). He tested the lens on the probably last ever made Sony DSRL with optical viewfinder?the A580. He posted many interesting detailed test about the lens. I am not going to disclose here all his findings but in short he writes: ?Probably the best quality of this lens is the nice contrast and resolution at F/2.8-4.? In fact, there isn?t a reason to stop it down further if sharpness is your main concern, depth of field of course is another matter.? Low-light hand-held shooters will love this lens.? Other nice optical qualities include low light fall-off, no coma, and manageable distortion at longer focal lengths?.

Good work Sony?.we now need more of these kind of new high quality lenses!

While Sony has hard times to ship the A77+16-50mm lens kit it?s a bit easier to find the A77 body and lens in Stock as separate items. The lens is in Stock almost everywhere:
In USA-Canada at Amazon, Sonystore, Adorama, BHphoto, and Sony CA (Click on shop names to visit the lens search page)
In Europe at Amazon DE, Sony DE, Amazon UK, Amazon FR, Sony FR, Sony NL and Sony IT.
In Asia at Digitalrev and Amazon JP.

Of course this is a limited list of stores I check almost daily. Can?t really check every little store of the world :) Feel free to complete the list by adding your links to the comment section!
