Straightforward Methods To Lighten Up Your House | Free Article ...

We see the same views every day in our homes, and that's why so many owners decide that it is time for a little remodeling. Painting the walls, rearranging the furniture, and going with new molding ? these can look like straightforward enough tasks from the beginning. However , many individuals find that they are alarming. No matter what your goals are, check out these home- improvement tips.

Making a standard utility room in your original home design is a really smart idea. In this manner you can put all of your application appliances in one place. If you can keep your cooling and heating system, hot water heater, and electrical panel all in one expediently found area, it will be easier to service them, and you will avoid wasting a lot of space for storage by having them in separate areas of your home.

Consider insulating your residence during your next home-improvement project. Place weather-stripping on all of your doors and windows. If you're able to reduce the amount of air getting into your house, your cooling and heating systems will run better. This suggests that you will save cash on your energy bills.

If you're considering the utilisation of a conventional wood hearth for heating your home, understand that this might not be the best route. Aside from classy reasons, this sort of system is also quite wasteful because the majority of the heat ends up going through the chimney. As well as this, the fire needs lots of fresh air, which should be provided from inside your house, basically eating up lots of the oxygen within your house.

If the purpose of your house improvement project is to help sell the house, you need to take into account that straightforward cosmetic changes are sometimes better than installing new complex systems. For instance, while a floor heating system could be a really cool feature, an easy paint job is more effective. A paint job makes the house look fresh and attractive to all potential buyers, while a floor heating system is simply a neat add-on and not a selling point.

Devote a little time into weather-stripping your house. Although your place could be insulated, there are likely little crevices around windows and doors thru which air will leak. That suggests your place will lose cool air in the summer and warm air during the winter, leading to a higher power bill when you run cooling and heating appliances. Weather-stripping your doors and windows will keep that from taking place.

If you've got an interest in saving money on heating and cooling bills in your house one of the first steps you should take are stopping up drafts. It is frequently said that up to 40% of the energy lost in your house is due to air seepages. Commence with the doors of your house.

Something that seems on the surface to be so simple can finish up being incredibly complicated if you're not conscious of how to deal with a task. Painting can turn into a nightmare; adding more lights could leave you in the dark. The tips in this article will help you to learn about DIY, so put them to good use.

Too Many Cooks, Not Enough Fish. What's The Solution?

Yes, there are more and more people on the planet, and yes, there are fewer and fewer fish in the sea, but do we really notice? After all, fish live in water and we live on land; so we don't mingle that much. If fish were sparrows, we might see a dramatic decline, but who misses what they don't see in the first place?

Resetting What's "Normal"

Second, and this is the more subtle point, if animals are disappearing slowly, we are wired not to see the extent of the decline. People think "normal" or "natural" is what they saw when they were kids. If there were lots of bees in your neighborhood when you were 8 years old, that's the number of bees you expect to see when you're 68. If your grandma saw double that number 60 years earlier, her baseline is erased when she dies. Your experience becomes the new normal. When you die, "normal" resets and becomes whatever your daughter saw when she was 8.

Meantime, almost without realizing it, the "normal" number of bees keeps getting lower and lower.

That's why this graph of fish in the sea is so revealing. Based on a study by Dr. Villy Christensen and colleagues at the University of British Columbia, it shows population (biomass) changes of various fish in the Atlantic over several human generations ? from 1900 to 2000.

?

The fish here include bluefin tuna, cod, haddock, hake, halibut, herring, mackerel, pollock, salmon, sea trout, striped bass, sturgeon, turbot, the species traditionally favored by humans; they are also larger. As the two maps show, in 1900 these fish were found all along the African, European and British coasts. The North Sea (between Britain and Scandinavia) was thick with them; there was a mysterious (to me) patch in the mid-Atlantic, plus a thick clump from Florida to Labrador, then over to Greenland and across to Iceland.

Fish were everywhere.

Then, just a hundred years, later ? except for a little patch near Labrador ? they're gone, or drastically diminished.

This is, of course, a macro picture. These bigger, popular fish are mostly not extinct. There are just way, way fewer of them, and while this happens in a blink of an eye in our animation, from the human point of view, the decline took four human generations.

Will We Eat Them Into Extinction? Maybe Not.

Which makes me wonder: if we don't notice that animals are in deep decline, do we keep eating and eating until what is disappearing is gone...permanently?

Or do we unconsciously adjust? Maybe, deep down, we sense that some foods are no longer plentiful so we make it the fashion to eat less of them? Do we reset our appetites from generation to generation?

I ask, because I'm reading a history book, Mr. Hornaday's War by Stefan Bechtel, which describes a banquet that took place in 1886, when there were more fish in the water, more birds in the air, more varieties of game. Back then, every year the richest folks in America threw an annual dinner in Chicago. The meal was a tradition, held just before Thanksgiving.

What General Grant Had For Dinner

The 1886 banquet was served at the Tremont House, a posh hotel on the corner of Dearborn and Lake Streets. Former President Ulysses Grant was there, so were Mr. and Mrs. Marshall Field from the department store, Mr. and Mrs. George Pullman, owners of the railroad company, Gen. Philip Sheridan, Civil War hero, and the menu was published in the Chicago Tribune on Nov. 22. Every dish was listed so that ordinary folks could imagine being there. The not so subtle message: if you reach the top of the heap in America, this is what you get to eat. Anything, everything that can be boiled, roasted, garnished, can be yours. It's less a meal than a parade.

I want to reprint the menu for you, or part of it anyway, which is labeled: "Procession of Game."

SOUP

Venison (Hunter style) Game Broth

FISH

Broiled Trout, Shrimp Sauce, Baked Black Bass, Claret Sauce

BOILED

Leg of Mountain Sheep, Ham of Bear, Venison Tongue, Buffalo Tongue

ROAST

Loin of Buffalo, Mountain Sheep, Wild Goose, Quail, Redhead Duck, Jack Rabbit, Blacktail Deer, Coon, Canvasback Duck, English Hare, Bluewing Teal, Partridge, Widgeon, Brant, Saddle of Venison, Pheasants, Mallard Duck, Prairie Chicken, Wild Turkey, Spotted Grouse, Black Bear, Oppossum, Leg of Elk, Wood Duck, Sandhill Crane, Ruffed Grouse Cinnamon Bear

BROILED

Bluewing Teal, Jacksnipe, Blackbirds, Reed Birds, Partridges, Pheasants, Quails, Butterballs, Ducks, English Snipe, Rice Birds, Red-wing Starling, Marsh Birds, Plover, Gray Squirrel, Buffalo Steak, Rabbits, Venison Steak

ENTREES

Antelope Steak, Mushroom sauce; Rabbit Braise, Cream Sauce: Fillet of Grouse with Truffles; Venison Cutlet, Jelly Sauce; Ragout of Bear, Hunter Style; Oyster Pie

SALADS

Shrimp, Prairie Chicken, Celery

ORNAMENTAL DISHES

Pyramid of Game en Bellevue, Boned Duck au Naturel, Pyramid of Wild-Goose Liver in Jelly, The Coon Out at Night, Boned Quail in Plumage, Red-Wing Starling on Tree, Partridge in Nest, Prairie Chicken en Socle

Obviously, this meal was part show, part chew. Nobody could eat this much food. But the understated theme was life at the top is a cornucopia: You Can Have It All ? antelope steak, ragout of bear, squirrel, plover, possum...

By contrast, here's what was on the menu on March 14, 2012, at a White House State Dinner for British Prime Minister David Cameron:

FIRST COURSE

Crisped Halibut with Potato Crust, served on a bed of baby kale fresh from the White House garden, shaved Brussels sprouts and micro cabbage sprouts.

SALAD COURSE

Spring Garden Lettuces with radishes, cucumbers and avocodo (greens also From the White House Garden)

MAIN COURSE

Bison Wellington

DESSERT

Steamed Lemon Pudding over Newtown Pippin Apples (the apples "are believed to have been developed in Queens, New York")

Compared to 1886, this is a trifle! Even the language ("baby" kale, "micro" cabbage, plucked from our own little garden in the back) suggests that at the pinnacle of power, today we watch our calories, keep it local, scale it down. Even the bison meat, I'm guessing, was served in thin slices.

In 1886, we gorged. In 2012, we nibble.

These very different dinners describe very different moods which, in turn, reflect very different worlds. Is a balance being struck here? Do we somehow know we can't afford to have it all, so that what was "fabulous" in 1886 has been reformulated to a more appropriate, more modest "fabulous" today?

I'm not sure. If I offered you a plate of opossum, followed by a leg of elk, then wood duck, and a thick slice of cinnamon bear, how many of you would say "Bring it on!" And how many of you would say, "Let's just do the elk, thank you. And maybe bring me a doggie bag."

I'm just asking.

Stefan Bechtel's book Mr. Hornaday's War: How a Peculiar Victorian Zookeeper Waged A Lonely Crusade for Wildlife That Changed The World tells the story of a pioneer of the conservation movement William T. Hornaday. I've wondered about Mr. Hornaday in an earlier blog post. For a vivid accounting of what's happening in our oceans, Professor Callum Roberts' book, The Unnatural History Of The Sea is excellent. The disappearing fish graphic was designed by David McCandless and can be found on his Information is Beautiful site. The data comes from this study.

The image from Engelbert Humperdinck's "Hansel and Gretel" at the top of this post was taken by my sister Sara, who photographs for The New York Times. This is a scene from the Metropolitan Opera's 2011 production and it demonstrates (if I may be so bold) that my sister really, really knows what she's doing.

Creative Success, LLC How to Get Real Help from Self-help Hype ...

I recently met a wonderful woman from Maine, Amy Wood,?who wrote a fabulous book called Life Your Way. She is my first guest on this week?s blog tour of articles about self-growth and personal empowerment. I think you will agree that Amy makes some terrific points to help us to create a happy life!

Everywhere we go ? the internet, the book store, the grocery store check-out line ? carefully crafted headlines fight to sell us on the implausible yet tempting idea that we can have, be, and do whatever we want by next month, this Friday, right this minute.? All we have to do is simply stop trying so hard and swallow some simplistic regimen.? A vacation home, dream job, soul mate, ageless body, or whatever else we?re after can be ours forever if we just read these three secrets or those five easy steps.? ?Yeah, right!? we seasoned adults say right back to all the quick-fix remedies competing for our attention.? ?Do you really think I?m gonna fall for that??

As a woman who earns her living from helping people to clarify and cultivate their goals and dreams, I can certainly see that in this age of transformation and reinvention, empty personal improvement rhetoric is one of the most prevalent snake oils on the market.? But what I also see is that real wisdom can be found in overblown antidotes if you take them with a grain or two of salt.?? The solution is not to throw the baby out with the bathwater, so to speak, but to turn self-help hype into real help by applying common sense to the pumped up promises.

Here are three examples of how self-help fluff can become solid counsel:

The hype:??? The outcome you want will manifest if you envision it.

Real help:?? Imagination alone will not make things happen, but it can definitely help.? Picturing a passing grade when you haven?t studied for a test won?t get you very far.? But ask any successful athlete and they will tell you that they win more than they lose because they vividly visualize the results they want as they train.? If you focus your mind on what you desire AND work hard to bring your goal to fruition, you are more likely to be successful.

The hype:?? You can catapult yourself to the next level by talking ?as if? you are already there.

Real help:?? Saying affirmations ? telling yourself you are capable and confident in this or that area when you don?t feel that way ? will indeed move you steadily where you want to go.? But here?s the catch:? your affirmations can?t be too big a stretch.?? If you?re up to your ears in unfinished projects, your brain will reject ?Everything is done and I feel great? but ?I?m tackling my projects one rewarding step at a time? will likely bring about a sense of progress.? Likewise, ?I enjoy moving my body? will be more motivating than ?I love working out six days a week? if you?re just decided to get off the couch and exercise.

The hype:? Positive thinking makes life pain-free.

Real help:?? There is no question that glass-half-full people have it made.? It follows that those who complain less than others are more fun to be around and attract better opportunities.? But let?s be clear here:? optimism will make you more resilient? in the face of heartache, disappointment, and failure, but not immune to the curve balls all adults are dealt.? ?Optimism is about taking in the whole picture, embracing the good and the bad, and choosing to focus on what?s going well over what?s wrong.? Whether you?re sizing up the economy, the cyberspace dating pool, or a half-baked self improvement suggestion, ?you?re bound to fare better if you practice a hopeful perspective.

About Amy Wood:

"I'd like to apologize to the Lakers organization and to all of their fans for the untimeliness of these accusations. I promise to keep my focus and attention on the playoffs during this time and to helping my team win another championship."
