Scientists from across the world will meet at the University of Bristol on 6 June 2012 for a New Phytologist Workshop on Synthetic Biology (http://www.newphytologist.org/synthetic). There, they will discuss recent advances in this rapidly evolving and controversial new field.

Synthetic biology made headlines in 2010 when researchers at the J Craig Venter Institute announced they had created the first 'synthetic cell'. Created by transferring an artificially constructed DNA sequence into an existing cell which had been stripped of its native DNA, the cell behaved like a member of the species dictated by the synthetic DNA. Since then, the ambition and scale of synthetic biology enterprises have increased even further.

One key principle in the field is the standardisation of 'biological parts' in order to construct synthetic genes, systems or even entire species from new. This is a concept more familiar to engineers than biologists and indeed, attendees at the meeting will have a range of backgrounds from engineering and medicine to plant biologists and industrial scientists.

The idea of breaking down genes, complex biological systems, into simplified building blocks which can be shared and altered freely before being applied to a vast range of tasks is an appealing one to both researchers and industrialists.

With a quickly expanding toolkit and unconstrained by the limits of traditional genetic modification techniques (where genes must already exist in nature to be utilised), synthetic biology offers the opportunity to synthesise completely 'custom' genomes for specific applications. Anne Osbourn, Associate Research Director at the prestigious John Innes Centre, Editor of the New Phytologist journal and an organiser of the workshop suggests that the range of applications of synthetic biology is huge.

'As just one example, synthetic biology has the potential to enable us to make fuels, pharmaceuticals, chemicals and novel biomaterials faster, better and cheaper,' Anne explains. 'It could provide new ways of improving life in developing countries, for example through the generation of biosensors that monitor water quality or allow early detection of disease outbreaks.'

Synthetic biology also offers huge potential benefits when applied in plants and scientists at the workshop will detail research topics ranging from ensuring food security through crop improvement to re-engineering plants for other uses such as producing superior polymers for industry or vaccines for medicine. One presentation at the workshop will focus on technology developed at the John Innes Centre that has already been used to produce a vaccine for the H5N1 avian flu virus.

However, as with genetic modification in the past there are groups with growing concerns about the use of synthetic biology. Drawing parallels with recent events at GM crop trials conducted at Rothamsted Research and attempts by scientists to engage with protestors there, speakers on the final day of the workshop will outline the need for scientists to take the opportunity to 'frame' the debate around synthetic biology at an early stage as was arguably failed to achieve by scientists working on GM in earlier decades.

In addition to bringing together scientists from the field, the workshop aims to make synthetic biology more accessible to the interested public by hosting the presentations and discussion on YouTube. 'Synthetic biology encourages scientists to work together with others to identify grand challenges faced by society and to collectively find solutions,' suggests Osbourn. 'To do this effectively it is essential that there is meaningful and productive engagement between scientists who engage in synthetic biology and the wider public. This is something that the synthetic biology community is committed to.'

Health and Fitness ? Urban Legends exposed for Truth | Free Press ...

There are many truths about health and fitness, and some lies that are not really untrue. When it comes to exercise and people the body works differently with each of us. So what is true for one person may not be necessarily true for others, or some percentage of other people. In that situation, it is not a lie at all. That is why you need to deal with questionable truths, or information, almost on a case by case basis. A little bit a research can help you uncover a lot of information and that is the real clue to getting the truth about health and fitness. If the information is less than true, you should do some research.

You can find plenty of information about back pain products and information including yoga online. Typically, the marketing says that doing yoga can help with back pain. While this is true in some cases, it is also misleading and dangerous. If your back pain is caused by muscle issues, then doing yoga can certainly help. For example, you may need to stretch and strengthen certain muscles in your back or other areas. Your back pain will go away as you do that. However, if your back pain is related to bones and related tissue, such as a spinal disc problem, then yoga is not the ticket for you. In this kind of situation, you risk doing more damage by practicing yoga.

Studies show that there is a connection between stress relief and exercise. You may have the thought that exercising or working out is stressful. So? how does that work? Performing exercises causes your body to produce a relaxation response. Granted, you may not necessarily feel it if you?re running or sweating all over the place in the gym. To get your body and mind distracted from any stress you may be feeling do some exercises. To create a natural feeling of euphoria you need to get yourself to a point where endorphins can be released.

Serious disease conditions can be slowed or prevented by implementing a healthy fitness program and a well balanced diet. Of course you?ve heard about exercise and cardio health. High blood pressure, diabetes and high cholesterol are only a few of the other conditions that can be positively impacted by exercise. Beyond medical diseases, you can slow the aging process in some respects by following a good exercise routine along with a healthy lifestyle. It?s really important to sort the truth from fiction if you are new to working out. This is because you are in the beginning stages of forming your fitness habit. If you cultivate the wrong or incorrect habits, then obviously you will be setting yourself up for a hard re-education in the future. Forming good habits is crucial not only to your success but to actually sticking with your fitness routine.

What earnings reports have revealed about ads

Here are highlights of recent quarterly earnings reports from selected Internet and media companies and what they say about the state of spending on advertising:

April 12: Google Inc. says its revenue, after subtracting ad commissions, totaled $8.14 billion in the first quarter. Analysts were expecting revenue of $8.09 billion on this basis. Google's revenue was helped by a 39 percent increase in "paid clicks," but the prices of its search-driven text ads continued to decline. The so-called "cost-per-click" for these ads declined 12 percent from the same time a year earlier.

April 16: Gannett Co. reports a 25 percent drop in first-quarter net income, as advertising in its newspapers continued to decline. Broadcasting revenue rose, helped by advertising related to autos, the Super Bowl and political campaigns.

April 17: Yahoo Inc. says that after subtracting commissions paid to its advertising partners, revenue was $1.08 billion in the first quarter, up slightly from last year. It marked the first time since the third quarter of 2008 that Yahoo's quarterly net revenue has increased from the previous year.

Omnicom Group Inc., which owns marketing agencies, says its domestic revenue climbed 4 percent in the latest quarter, while international revenue increased nearly 6 percent.

April 19: Microsoft Corp. says it reduced losses in its online services division, which includes the ad-supported Bing search engine. The division's operating loss was $479 million, compared with $776 million a year ago. The division had $707 million in revenue, up 6 percent from $667 million.

The New York Times Co. says print and digital advertising revenue declined amid what CEO Arthur Sulzberger Jr. called "the uneven U.S. economic environment and uncertain global conditions." Advertising revenue fell 8 percent to $237.9 million, from $258.9 million a year ago.

April 25: The McClatchy Co. reports a slightly larger net loss due to declining advertising revenue. Meanwhile, compensation and other costs at the nation's third-largest newspaper company fell while digital advertising increased.

April 26: The Interpublic Group of Companies Inc., one of the world's largest advertising agency conglomerates, says revenue rose 2 percent to $1.51 billion, beating the $1.49 billion expected by analysts.

Time Warner Cable Inc. says advertising revenue grew 7 percent to $211 million in the quarter.

Online games company Zynga Inc. says revenue from advertising more than doubled to $28.2 million, from $13 million a year earlier.

April 27: WPP Group PLC, another owner of ad agencies, says revenue grew 4 percent after excluding acquisitions and changes in currency exchange rates.

May 1: CBS Corp. says advertising revenue grew 5 percent to $2.4 billion.

May 2: Time Warner Inc. says advertising revenue at its cable TV networks grew 6 percent, or $64 million, on stronger rates and better timing of March Madness basketball games. Ad revenue at the Time Inc. magazine business fell 5 percent, or $19 million.

Comcast Corp. says its NBCUniversal cable TV networks saw a 6 percent increase in advertising revenue. It did not break out ad revenue figures for the NBC broadcast network and stations, but says revenue grew from higher ratings and from carrying the Super Bowl, which was on Fox last year. Ad revenue at Comcast's cable-distribution division grew 5 percent.

May 3: Viacom Inc., owner of MTV, Nickelodeon and Comedy Central, says domestic advertising revenue increased 1 percent, while worldwide ad revenue was flat at $1.07 billion.

May 4: The Washington Post Co. says print advertising at its namesake newspaper fell 17 percent to $53 million. The division's online revenue, primarily from the Post's website and Slate magazine, fell 7 percent to $24 million. That reflects an 11 percent decline in display online advertising revenue in the unit and a 1 percent decline in online classified ad revenue at the Post's website.

Clear Channel Outdoor Holdings Inc. says revenue was virtually flat at $651 million.

May 8: The Walt Disney Co. says ESPN ad sales rose 14 percent, or 6 percent when excluding the timing of events such as the Rose Bowl and the impact of the NBA lockout. Disney says ESPN got a boost from higher rates. At the ABC television operations, network ad revenue rose 6 percent, but ad revenue at the eight TV stations it owns fell 8 percent

Discovery Communications Inc., operator of channels such as Animal Planet, says ad revenue rose 16 percent to $453 million.

May 9: AOL Inc. says advertising revenue grew 5 percent to $330 million, helped by higher international display advertising sales and third-party network ads. Display ads are the Internet advertisements people commonly see on Web pages, as opposed to the search ads that Google Inc. is best known for. These are more profitable for AOL than the third-party ads, so they're a more closely watched metric.

The Owl Club: tea party garlands

Last month I wrote about the fun I had making decorative papers using that fun childhood craft, potato printing (read the post). Well, here's what it turned into!Once again this is for the tea party we're having on Tuesday afternoon, to say farewell to a dear friend who is moving abroad (home) with her family. She is a crafty type and has made lovely decorations for several fun family parties, so I wanted to do something special to send her off in style. It was hard to take photos because the wind was making the teapots and teacups dance! It looked so pretty! I should have made a video instead. My apple trees are modelling here, but I'll be sure to take photos on the day: this is but one of several garlands I made (plus the fabric bunting and a paper banner saying, "we'll miss you").

So how did I make these? Well, I simply drew around teacup and teapot templates and cut them out (the paper is decorated on both sides). I'm grateful to the magical craft book Everything Alice for the templates! Then I put them through a laminator and cut them out again, leaving a margin so each piece is secure between the plastic. Now that they are laminated they are both durable and waterproof (quite useful for the UK!) Also I like that they are shiny - it makes the colours pop.I punched little holes each side with a small hole punch, and threaded pieces of ribbon through, securing each with a knot, and alternating blue and red ribbon. I used 6 teapots and 15 teacups for each garland.

This wasn't an idea found in a book or on Pinterest - I just made it up! It is extremely easy, but rather time consuming to make. It is quite good for busy people and parents, because I found I could chip away at the project here and there in odd moments, and gradually bring it all together. One evening my husband helped out, cutting out some of the shapes - but he found it fiddly and irritating, whereas I found it meditative and relaxing!

I think these would look pretty in pastel-printed papers, or tissue paper (the sun would glow through). Also my son thought it was like a train with LOTS of carriages - it would be awesome to make a real train for a kid's party! Sadly I don't think I'll have time to do this for my son's birthday party at the end of this month: he may find he has tea garlands for his train-themed party!

Analysis: The verdict on the Edwards?verdict

TODAY's Savannah Guthrie and NBC's political director, Chuck Todd, debate the possibility of the Justice Department seeking a retrial in the John Edwards case and whether a political comeback is likely for the former presidential hopeful.

By Hampton Dellinger, Special to NBC News

ANALYSIS

By not losing on any of the six felony counts for which he was being tried, John Edwards won the biggest victory of his political and legal life on Thursday.?A mistrial on five counts and an acquittal on one resulted in a clear -- if not complete -- legal vindication and a likely fatal setback for federal prosecutors seeking to convict the former U.S. senator and 2004 Democratic vice presidential nominee for allegedly violating the Federal Election Campaign Act.????

Arguably the most famous American lawyer since Clarence Darrow to face a criminal trial, Edwards may well see the inside of a courtroom again, but as a still-licensed attorney rather than as a criminal defendant facing retrial.?

Having followed the investigation and prosecution since its inception in 2008, having attended pre-trial hearings in 2011 and having witnessed the entire 2012 trial, I offer the following?seven takeaways on what happened, why, and what?s coming:

The?government?s?case?can?only?get?worse.? The trial that just ended represented prosecutors? best opportunity to obtain a conviction.? The U.S. Department of Justice?s failure to prevail on a single count had nothing to do with the quality of the lawyers involved.? David V. Harbach, from DoJ?s Public Integrity Section in Washington, D.C., and Robert J. Higdon, with the U.S. Attorney?s office in Raleigh, N.C., both did a masterful job.??

Hampton Dellinger

Hampton Dellinger, a litigation partner with Robinson Bradshaw & Hinson of Charlotte and Chapel Hill, N.C., is former deputy attorney general of North Carolina and has taught election law at Duke University Law School. In 2008, he sought the Democratic nomination for lieutenant governor of North Carolina.

Harbach and Higdon knew the law and the facts.? They were prepared and skilled in their direct and cross examinations.??Their closing arguments were powerful, indeed eloquent.? They clearly earned the respect of presiding U.S. District Court Judge Catherine Eagles and virtually every important evidentiary ruling went in their favor.? And yet they still came up short. ?Moreover, it is likely the government?s key witness -- former Edwards aide turned Edwards accuser Andrew Young -- would do even worse in a second trial where he could be cross-examined not only about statements in his sex scandal tell-all, ?The Politician,? but also his days of first trial testimony.??

Even?if?prosecutors?could?obtain a?conviction,?would?it?survive on appeal?? What was easily overlooked in the daily theatrics of the trial -- and even without Edwards or his mistress, Rielle Hunter, taking the stand, there was courtroom drama by the barrelful ? was how vulnerable any conviction of Edwards would be to reversal on appeal. ?

The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit, and then likely the U.S. Supreme Court, could question whether there was sufficient evidence of Edwards?s criminal intent in a case where the government had to prove beyond a reasonable doubt a ?knowing and willful? violation of FECA.? Plus, the?correctness of the trial judge?s ruling that ?the government does not have to prove that the sole or only purpose of the money [to cover up the affair] was to influence the election? would be scrutinized on review.?

And, as the Citizens United decision epitomizes, federal judges and justices are now extremely skeptical of campaign-related spending restraints in the absence of actual or likely political corruption. The lack of any evidence of a quid pro quo in the Edwards?s case, would have brought the First Amendment implications of the prosecution into the foreground on appeal, along with a host of?other credible grounds for a conviction reversal.?

John Edwards?may?be?many?bad?things,?but?he?s?no Rod Blagojevich.?? Disconcertingly youthful?hair aside, comparing Edwards to the former Illinois governor now in federal prison after being retried on political corruption charges in 2011 isn?t fair.? First, Blagojevich?s initial trial resulted in a conviction on one count.? Edwards of course was?just acquitted on the sole count where the jury reached unanimity.??

After more than four weeks of testimony and nine days of deliberations, jurors in the John Edwards trial were able to reach consensus on only one of six counts, finding him not guilty of receiving campaign contributions from a wealthy heiress. NBC's Lisa Myers reports.

More important, Blagojevich was accused of engaging in classic quid pro quo political corruption ? essentially offering an incredibly valuable official act (appointment to a U.S. Senate seat) in exchange for support for his re-election campaign.? As noted above, In Edwards?s case there was no allegation ? none ? of a quid pro quo.? One of the affair cover-up funders was Rachel ?Bunny? Mellon.? A near centenarian at the time of her payments to Andrew Young and his wife, Cheri, (only a fraction of were passed along to Hunter), her ambassador appointment days were surely over. The other funder,? Fred Baron, had no designs on Attorney General or other high office as far as we know. Neither sought an earmark or?any other official act.??

This would have been a very different case if it wasn?t the first of its kind.?? Having assisted with political corruption investigations and efforts to uphold campaign finance restrictions during my years in the North Carolina Attorney General?s office, I naturally side with ?clean campaign? types, some (but not all) of whom supported the Edwards prosecution.? But what supporters of the government?s case generally failed to acknowledge was the lack of any clear legal precedents in favor of indicting and trying Edwards, something I pointed out months ago.?

Full trial coverage from NBC News and msnbc.com

/

Former Democratic presidential candidate John Edwards has faced public and private challenges throughout his life and career.

Politicians ? even deeply flawed ones like John Edwards ? deserve to know what the rules are before they are indicted for breaking them.? As one critic of the case told me recently: it?s one thing to ask jurors to throw the book at a defendant, it?s another to ask them to write it first.?

Left hand (DoJ) meet right (FEC).? While the prosecution was above reproach in terms of courtroom conduct, the absence of a finding by the Federal Election Commission of even a civil violation related to Edwards? conduct was striking.? As discussed in a prior post, DoJ?s typical practice has been to only bring criminal charges in situations where the FEC saw wrongdoing at some level; before a criminal case is brought, ?There must be no doubt that the commission considers that the underlying conduct presents a FECA offense,? the Department wrote in 2009.?

The Edwards jury got a glimpse into the FEC?s satisfaction with the Edwards campaign filings, and even that small view may well have been decisive.? While the FEC is a very different agency than DoJ, the less aligned the two are on campaign finance probes the more likely Edwards-like trial losses will continue to occur.?

Making an oft- maligned profession look good, part 1.?? Lawyers are often derided, but it wasn?t only the prosecutors who acquitted the profession well. The defense team?? D.C.-based Abbe Lowell, aided by North Carolinians Allison Van Laningham and Alan Duncan --?was similarly stellar.? Maybe even more important than the skillful advocacy was the degree of civility and professionalism displayed by attorneys on both sides, both to their co-counsel and to their adversaries. The stakes in this case were sky high for the defense and the prosecution: Edwards? liberty on one?side, the ability of the DoJ?s Public Integrity section to obtain a conviction in a high profile trial on the other. And yet the battling advocates were almost unfailingly courteous and respectful to each other. It?s the kind of courtroom decorum lawyers should exhibit every time but too often don?t.?

Making an oft-maligned profession look good, part 2.?? Another frequently poked-fun-at group -- the mainstream media ? also acquitted itself well at the Edwards trial, save for one unfortunate allegation (?the flirting juror?), which was later retracted.? I was particularly struck by an effort to ensure an accurate record of the proceedings that began almost immediately.? Despite all the competitive pressures to be the first media member to race out of the courtroom and proclaim the latest trial twist, reporters and producers (print, radio and TV) would immediately circle up at each break and compare notes with each other, all in effort to ensure that witness? testimony, lawyers? arguments, and the judge?s rulings were reported as close to verbatim and 100 percent correct as possible.? Because the trial was not televised, it was only the assembled press that could provide a picture of what transpired. The picture of media competitors collaborating to make sure everyone got the story right is one I?ll never forget.?

I?m a lawyer first but I enjoyed assisting with the reporting and analyzing of the Edwards trial.? It was an honor to assist NBC, MSNBC and of course msnbc.com with coverage of the case.?? Above all, thanks to you the reader for taking the time to consider my take.

City to host laser research hub

Europe's largest contract research organisation is to create a hub for laser research and technology in Glasgow.

The move by Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft is a strategic collaboration with the University of Strathclyde.

The Fraunhofer Centre for Applied Photonics will cover a variety of sectors including security, healthcare, energy and transport.

It will be the organisation's first centre in the UK.

The hub will be based in the university's Technology and Innovation Centre.

The photonics centre is being funded by Fraunhofer and the university, the Scottish government, Scottish Enterprise and the Scottish Funding Council.

It is expected to be the model for more Fraunhofer research centres around the UK.

The research organisation said it would also be establishing its UK headquarters at the university.

'Win-win situation'

Education Secretary Michael Russell said: "Scottish universities are known around the world for their excellence and Glasgow has a global reputation for advanced research and technology.

"It's great news that this success has helped to attract Fraunhofer to Scotland.

"Building on the links between education and industry is a win-win situation that will benefit our economy.

"Securing the UK's first Fraunhofer centre is a major achievement for the University of Strathclyde's Technology and Innovation Centre and I look forward to watching this exciting initiative develop," he added.

The innovation centre, which is due to open in a dedicated facility in 2014, aims to transform the way universities, business and industry collaborate to find solutions to global challenges, create jobs and support the economy.

University of Strathclyde principal Prof Jim McDonald commented: "It is fitting that the UK's first Fraunhofer Centre is dedicated to lasers, a thriving industry Scotland has excelled in for decades.

"The plans have already been endorsed by our partners in industry and we look forward to working together to innovate, design and develop the products and services of tomorrow."

'Excellent reputation'

Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft executive board member Ulrich Buller said the university had an excellent reputation for industrial engagement and specifically for photonics research and commercialisation via its Institute of Photonics and other research groups.

"Consequently, Fraunhofer has been eager, for some time, to create a research centre in Glasgow in conjunction with Strathclyde," he added.

The UK headquarters and the Fraunhofer Centre for Applied Photonics will join a growing community of Fraunhofer centres globally.

Fraunhofer has more than 20,000 employees in more than 80 research units in Germany alone, and is establishing centres throughout Europe, Asia and North America.

Fraunhofer research has formed the basis of a wide range of technologies for industry and products in everyday use, such as the MP3 player and apps for mobile phones, including customised weather reports and music identification systems like the iPhone app, Shazam.

Burrell?s Myers states his college case at state track meet

SHIPPENSBURG ? When Burrell senior sprinter Darren Myers thinks about how far he?s come in a year, he?s amazed.

Myers went from falling short of the WPIAL track and field championships last year to earning a pair of PIAA medals this season. He went from being a relative unknown in local track circles to a success story.

Myers was sixth place in the Class AA 200 meters in 22.73 seconds and eighth in the 100 (11.41) on Saturday at the state meet at Shippensburg University.

?I?m ecstatic, thinking about not making WPIALs last year to medaling at states,? Myers said. ?That?s a big accomplishment.?

Myers, who won the WPIAL Class AA 200 title last week, hopes his success will attract a college scholarship offer. His ability to compete with elite high school sprinters could boost his chances.

?I?m hoping someone will come along real soon,? he said. ?That?s all I can hope for. Any Division I or II schools are fine. I just want to run in college.?

Several other local boys made it to the medal stand yesterday. In Class AAA, Kiski Area?s 3,200 relay team of senior Richard Lednak, junior Tyler Snider and sophomores Brent Kennedy and Patrick Miller took sixth place and dusted their school record with a time of 7:51.40.

Last week, the Cavaliers repeated as WPIAL champions even though they have two new members this season. Last year, despite winning the WPIAL title, they failed to make the finals at states. The squad earned some redemption.

?The experience from last year helped prepare us,? Lednak said. ?The pressure didn?t get to us. I think we proved ourselves.?

Kennedy (4:19.51) also took eighth in the 1,600.

?I got two state medals,? Kennedy said. ?You can?t ask for more than that. I?ll look to build on that next year.?

In the Class AAA 3,200, Fox Chapel sophomore Ethan Martin ran a personal-best time of 9:24.35 to clinch a seventh-place medal. Martin was seeded 13th.

?It?s awesome,? he said. ?I was seeded pretty low, and I was worried I?d be caught in the back (of the pack). But it split apart a little, and I was able to work my way up.?

In the Class AA discus, Riverview senior Nick Delmonaco scored a sixth-place medal at 153 feet, 9 inches.

?I wasn?t happy,? he said. ?I was definitely off. It just didn?t connect with me.?

On Friday, Delmonaco placed third in the shot put.

?I was better in the discus most of this year, but I ended up doing better in the shot put at states,? he said. ?It?s crazy how it works sometimes.?
