AdWatch: Obama whacks anew at Romney tax-cut plan

WASHINGTON (AP) ? TITLE: "Trust"

LENGTH: 30 seconds.

AIRING: This ad by the Obama campaign is airing in the closely contested states of Colorado, Florida, Iowa, New Hampshire, Nevada, Ohio and Virginia.

SCRIPT: Republican nominee Mitt Romney said in the first presidential debate that he's "not in favor of a $5 trillion tax cut. That's not my plan." This ad takes issue with that statement, citing a report from the Tax Policy Center. The narrator asks: "Why won't Romney level with us about his tax plan, which gives the wealthy huge new tax breaks?" The ad's answer is "because, according to experts, he'd have to raise taxes on the middle class or increase the deficit to pay for it."

KEY IMAGES: The ad starts with the clip from the Denver debate in which Romney disputes Obama's characterization of his tax plan. It cuts to an image of NBC News reporter Andrea Mitchell citing the Tax Policy Center report. As the narrator questions Romney's assertion, it shows images of the GOP nominee talking during the debate as Obama looks down. The ad concludes by shifting from the debate to the Oval Office: "If we can't trust him here, how can we ever trust him here?" the narrator asks.

ANALYSIS: Romney's debate performance won high marks from across the political spectrum. In it, he forcefully rejected one of the president's major lines of attack ? that Romney's tax cuts largely benefit the wealthy and would end up increasing the tax burden for middle-income Americans.

To support his charge, Obama relies on a study from the Tax Policy Center, a nonpartisan research group, that found Romney's proposed 20 percent across-the-board rate cut and repeal of the estate tax and the Alternative Minimum Tax would disproportionately benefit high-income households. The report concluded that it would be impossible for Romney to cut rates as he has promised without increasing the deficit ? which he vows not to do ? or raising taxes on middle-income households.

The report projected that the tax cuts would decrease revenue by about $480 billion in 2015, which the Obama campaign extrapolates to about $5 trillion over 10 years. Some conservative economists take issue with the Tax Policy Center's report, arguing that tax cuts allow people to make more income, which in turn creates more revenue for the government.

In effect, Romney is emphasizing the benefits of his tax plan without spelling out any of the trade-offs. Obama may not have gotten that point across as well as he wanted to on debate night, so he's taking a second crack at it in the ad.

A Baby Shower Amidst the CHAOS | Sawdust and Embryos

For some reason, I thought it would be a good idea to plan a baby shower and remodel my living room on the same weekend. It wouldn?t have happened this way if things had gone as planned. But we love entertaining, and I wasn?t about to let an inch of dust and power tools all over my living room prevent my from hosting a parTAY!

I mentioned on yesterday?s post about removing the living room wall that I took the girls to my parents on Saturday and did some baking. My mom and sister (Laura) were a HUGE help with this. And Laura even came back to our house and stayed over that night to help me set up the next day. She was so helpful with the girls. In this photo, she?s reading to Paisley from a Power Tool Catalogue.

AND, instead of frantically cleaning and trying to fit 30 people into a construction zone, we decided to move the living room outside. YEP!

P9292513

I don?t remember who?s idea it was, but I?ll take credit for it. It was freaking awesome. The girls made themselves right at home in the yard, being surrounded by all the familiar furniture and their toys.

P9292514

And it made for such a fun baby shower atmosphere. My sister-in-law, Carrie, is one of THE MOST BEAUTIFUL pregnant mamma?s of all time. And I can?t wait to meet their incoming little boy! (But not so impatient that I can?t wait a few more weeks? stay in there little buddy!)

Laura was in charge of games, and we had ?stroller relays? where two people raced in Paisley and Adelyn?s strollers with a HUGE water balloon in it. We set up an obstacle course, and it was SO hilarious. Also, I kicked Laura?s little hiney.

And our pumpkin-themed baked goods were a big success!

After everything wrapped up and people headed home, my immediate family stuck around and helped clean up (THANK YOU!). And I think they would agree that the ?after party? was the best. This is my mom with the girls. I love fall colors!

Nick and Tim (my brother/Carrie?s husband) decided it would be so fun to race each other with the strollers.

What was that? You want to see a video of this? That can be arranged. Please consider forgiving me for my loud obnoxious laughing.

Air India struggle to make semis

Bangalore, Sep 30

The star-studded Air India huffed and puffed to a 4-2 win over Jharkhand here Sunday to set up a semi-final clash with hosts Karnataka in Hockey India's senior men's National Hockey Championship.

Meanwhile, defending champions Haryana and Punjab came through some tricky moments for a workmanlike 4-2 win over an inexperienced Manipur while Karnataka chalked up an unimpressive 2-1 result against Tamil Nadu and Punjab shrugged off a one-goal deficit to beat Railway Sports Control Board 5-1.

Air India, courtesy twin strikes by their India stars Arjun Halappa (13th, 63rd) and Shivendra Singh (39th, 66th) saw off a spirited challenge from Jharkhand for whom Diwakar Ram (37th) and Anil Xaxa (58th) scored in a tight match.

Air India survived thanks to their goalkeeper Gurpreet Singh whose sharp reflexes and anticipation saw him bringing off several good saves to repeatedly frustrate Jharkhand.

Leading the Haryana charge was former India forward Bharat Chhikara who opened the scoring with goals in the third and sixth minutes while Mandeep Antil (43rd) and Didar Singh (44th) netted one apiece.

Manipur, playing in their maiden quarter-final game at this level, went down fighting with penalty corner goals by Jayantakumar Meitel (31st, 60th) keeping them in the frame, but Haryana held their ground in the last 10 minutes.

With a bit more experience and a sharper finish, Manipur could have troubled Haryana who boasted several India players in their ranks, but that was not to be.

Later, Karnataka, courtesy two first-half goals by M.K. Mudappa (29th) and P.L. Thimmanna (32nd), did just enough to overcome a fighting Tamil Nadu who had their chances, especially in the second-half, but failed to convert them.

The rival goalkeepers Olympian Sreejesh (Tamil Nadu) and Tarun Thammanna gave a good account of themselves to deny more goals, but it was a touch-and-go for the home team that will have to pull up their collective socks if they hope to go all the way in the tournament.

In the third quarter-final match, Punjab, who led 3-1 at half-time after conceding an early goal when B. Horo scored off a Vinod Kumar pass in the fifth minute, were stretched to the limit by Railways whose rather slack defence let them down.

Punjab's penalty corner specialist Gurjinder Singh again led the scorers' list with two conversions (12th, 47th) after Gurbaj Singh opened the account in the seventh minute, finding the boards from a goalmouth scramble.

Young Akashdeep Singh (31st) and Prabhdeep Singh (52nd) scored the other goals for Punjab who as in the previous matches, woke up rather late, but once in the groove, did not look back.

The results (quarter-finals):

Haryana 4 (Bharat Chhikara 3rd, 6th; Mandeep Antil 43rd; Didar Singh 44th) beat Manipur 2 (Jayantakumar Meitel 31st, 60th).

Karnataka 2 (M.K. Mudappa 29th; P.L. Thimanna 32nd) beat Tamil Nadu 0.

Punjab 5 (Gurjinder Singh 12th, 47th; Gurbaj Singh 7th; Akashdeep Singh 31st; Prabhdeep Singh 52nd) beat Railway Sports Control Board 1 (B. Horo 5th).

Air India 4 (Arjun Halappa 13th, 63rd; Shivendra Singh 39th, 66th) beat Jharkhand 2 (Diwakar Ram 37th, Anil Xaxa 58th).

Apple iPods and iPads to replace retail cash registers

Watch out, business machine production companies, Apple is about to take enter your market. Although it isn't official, Apple products are slowly replacing point of sale terminals, inventory databases, and customer profile management databases. Urban Outfitters took a daring leap towards 21st century technology. According to BusinessInsider, the company has decided to replace the cash registers in the retail stores with Apple iPads. Why? Apparently, Apple iPads cost 1/5 the price of a point of sale terminal and can do so much more. Apple iPads can serve multiple functions such as inventory management, gift registry, point of sale operations and more. Business machines can cost thousands of dollars just to handle the simplest tasks. Each machine is only capable of performing one specific function. They are costly and inefficient. Although Apple doesn't know it yet, they have the opportunity to target other businesses. Through the development of applications, companies can easily program applications to suit their needs. If Apple devices really do take off with business, consumers will have the benefit of spending less time waiting in line. With a more user friendly interface, self checkouts and increased point of sales terminals spread out across the retail floor is definitely possible. Since an iPad cost 1/5 of a point of sale terminal, therefore 5 iPads can be purchased for every point of sale terminal. Retailers have the option of doubling or even tripling the number of cash registers available, which would overall speed up the checkout process. Urban Outfitters has already taken to plunge, it is just a matter of time before other retailers follow suit.

Former Apple, NASA Engineers Make $11,111 Coffee Maker

A group of engineers who previously worked at Apple and NASA created an $11,111 coffee maker that measures the liquid?s heat as it brews to maintain the ?perfect? temperature.

Blossom Coffee?company is the brainchild of coffee fan,?Jeremy Kuempel, and two colleagues. Kuempel is an MIT engineering graduate who previously worked on Apple?s iPad and at electric-car maker Tesla.

The company debuted its first luxury product?at Tech Crunch?s Disrupt Conference earlier this month and is taking pre-orders for about 10 of the Blossom One Limited, which are intended for commercial use and will be available in the spring, the company said.

The Blossom One Limited is about the size of a traditional desktop computer, measuring 7 inches wide. So far, restaurants, cafes and private individuals have inquired about owning one.

When asked if he?s a coffee drinker, Kuempel answered, ?I?m obsessed with it.?

PHOTOS: $11,111 Coffee Maker Available for Pre-Orders

The company wanted to keep coffee as ?front and center? as possible, so the machine?s design only allowed the coffee to touch glass and steel, which are inert materials that won?t react with it.

?We started with the coffee and designed around it,? Kuempel said.

It also has Wi-Fi capability and a camera for a QR scanner. Why a camera?

Kuempel said the company is working with high-end coffee bean providers to one day allow users to scan a QR code on the coffee bag. That way, the coffee maker will know exactly what type of coffee it is and how to brew it.

?This is how crazy we are about coffee, design and service,? Kuempel said.

Blossom Coffee also is hoping to embody its enthusiasm for coffee in its level of customer service.?Built into the price of the coffee maker is a one-year parts and labor warranty that will bring a company representative to your door for any problem.

?We will be there to fix it, and we won?t charge you for it,? Kuempel said.

In addition, the coffee maker has a lifetime defect-free guarantee saying that it is free from errors; or, in other words, that the ?machine will do what we say it will do,? Kuempel said.

Not only that, but the company will work with clients to build a coffee maker that is perfect for them, including the device?s exterior. The company aims to?match whatever wooden material is requested.

Kuempel said, ?A lot of coffee houses feature wood in their design. We will go to lengths to find the exact same wood.?

What about marble or glass?

?We can?t promise it, but we will investigate it? and do whatever we can,? he said.

Thousands march in Paris against austerity

PARIS (AP) ? Thousands of demonstrators marched peacefully Sunday in Paris to denounce austerity measures in Europe that have sparked violent protests in other EU countries struggling to avert fiscal crises.

The march, organized largely by the Left Front party and the Communists, comes before the French parliament's debate this week on a European fiscal treaty. Organizers put turnout at more than 80,000; Paris police declined to provide an estimate.

The protest exposed political pressures faced by President Francois Hollande ? whose popularity has been sinking in recent polls ? and notably from some ostensible allies of the left. It was the biggest demonstration of its kind since Hollande was elected in the spring, just weeks before his Socialists won control of the National Assembly.

The treaty would set up the European Stability Mechanism bailout fund that European leaders hope will help calm a debt crisis that threatens the eurozone and the global economy.

The main conservative opposition party and most Socialist lawmakers back the treaty. But it has splintered the French left: Far-left parties, the Greens and some dissident Socialists oppose it. The measure is nonetheless likely to pass in parliament because the two biggest parties generally favor it.

On Friday, the French government presented a budget that included high taxes on the wealthiest, but which critics say lacks fundamental reforms that could jumpstart economic growth.

Austerity has fanned recent violence in places like Spain and Greece.

6 Ways Seniors Can Supercharge Brain Power

6 Ways Seniors Can Supercharge Brain Power

Aging is inevitable but there are effective ways seniors can decrease further memory decline and supercharge brain power.

You may already know that the brain is naturally prone to the aging process, just like other parts of the body. What you may not realize is this process begins when people reach their 30?s.

The brain becomes smaller, it stops creating fibrous tissues, and it?s capacity to make sensory connections are diminished. So, its important to start now to boost your memory to prevent any further deterioration.

Here?s some actions you can take to stay sharp:

  1. Get enough zzz's. It not only helps psychologically in regards to memorization, getting enough sleep reduces stress as well. Medical professionals advise snoozing for at least seven hours per night. They also recommend limiting your consumption of alcoholic beverages if you?re having trouble getting enough rest.
  2. Stay focused on one task at a time. Trying to do too many things at once is a huge distraction and hinders the ability to stay focused. As the mind ages, it becomes harder to recall names, reading material, recipes, etc. So, pay attention and limit the desire to multitask. Doing so will assist the brain in remembering info as its needed.
  3. Workout your mind. The brain is a muscle and needs exercise similar to the rest of the body. Chess, reading out loud, even brushing your teeth are all ways to exercise your mind, experts say. Online games that specialize in mind fitness are valuable resources, too. There?s no guarantee that digital games will prevent memory loss, but they can?t hurt. Find one or two that don?t require a fee and that promise to increase mental agility.
  4. Eat your fruits and veggies. Variety is the spice of life, especially when it applies to consuming a rainbow of fruits and vegetables. Sweet potatoes, tomatoes, and spinach are a few excellent examples that also contain those all-important antioxidants. Plus, eating several servings per day assists in preventing those nasty free-radicals from injuring cells.
  5. Drink a little vino. You?ll receive a two-fold advantage with this one as it helps the heart and the mind. Drinking small amounts of wine may also decrease the advancement of dementia in seniors who have experienced a slight decline in brain power already. As long as this doesn?t interfere with sleep patterns, drink up...in moderation, of course!
  6. Good old physical fitness. As noted earlier, working out your mind is just as important as working out your body. You don?t have to exercise with an extreme fitness program or purchase a gym membership to experience results, either. Something as simple as walking several days per week will provide significant benefits to memory health after only a few months of this activity. So, put on your walking shoes and get started today. Your heart and your brain will thank you.

There?s no magic pill to supercharge brain power. If there were, the pharmaceutical industry would have already created it. Nor will you develop the type of memorization you had as a youngster.

But applying these techniques will do wonders in preventing further memory decline, now and in the future.
